Post by SoxIlliniRob Mon Oct 22, 2018 9:54 pm

Recently, I've been on the fence about whether it's cool or not cool to scream, sing, accost senators when they are in a public restaurant.  Seriously, I'm torn.

Guys like McConnell and Cruz strike me as a couple of the biggest dicks in the universe, but if you yell or chant at them in restaurants until they give up and leave without eating, aren't you possibly ruining the dinner for everyone else in that restaurant?  There's a part of me that takes perverse joy in making sure that these guys know that their constituents are dismayed that they are eschewing public opinion and instead acting on behalf of donors.  Maybe a good rule might be that if they don't hold regular town halls then they ought to consider themselves fair game in public.  But if they do hold public events, then perhaps leave them alone?

I heard that about 8 weeks ago, some restaurant refused to serve Sarah Huckleberry Sandbag.  That's a little different than a public accosting.  Refusing to serve someone doesn't really send a message except that you might be intolerant.  An entire large group of constituents making their voice heard tells that person that it's not just one intolerant person.

I saw that yesterday or the day before, a large group of folks in Florida were aggressively screaming "fucking commie bitch...fucking piece of shit" and other nastiness at Nancy Pelosi and then began banging on the door of a room she entered.

    Getting nasty these days.

There is a special place in Hell for people who would do that. Agree with them or not, at least they are putting their money where their mouths are and ran for office.

Still torn.  If the townsfolk believe these officials are out there trying to advocate on their best behalf, they are probably more likely to act respectfully toward them.  If elected officials are ignoring the constituents and are oblivious to majority opinion, and are advocating instead on behalf of the wishes of large money donors, then they should not be surprised or horrified when the townsfolk accost them in public.  The townsfolk deserve a voice, and if the officials don't give them a voice either by voting their interests or by showing up to a town hall event, then this is to be expected.

Again, not sure doing it in a restaurant, where some unsuspecting folks are just trying to chill, is the best way.  But where else are you going to find a McConnell, or a Cruz, or a Pelosi?  It's not like they are also in Kinko's making copies or at the post office buying stamps.

How about their offices? I'm sure you would just love for some guy you refused to give a loan to to approach you at dinner screaming at your "unfair lending practices" calling you a "fucking son of a bitch who should die". Accosting people in public like this is never acceptable. What's next? Are you going to say it's okay for some loonies to approach Pelosi's husband at a restaurant because she isn't around and tell him that she's married to a "fucking baby-killing whore"? Or McConnell's wife in the grocery store screaming at him for "putting that cocksucker on the Supreme Court"? That's the logical place we are heading.

All these people are doing is giving the "other side" more ammunition with which to fight. It's wrong and in a civilized society, it's unacceptable.

No, I wouldn't want to be accosted in a restaurant regarding a loan, but I'm easily accessible all day long.  You need to not track me down in a restaurant.  I'd already have returned your call if you were an unhappy client.  I don't particularly know how accessible Pelosi is, or McConnell or Cruz and the likes.

Frankly, I'm surprised people have the guts to do that shit.  You know I'm pretty uptight and emotional about this stuff, but I can't envision any situation where I'd accost McConnell in a restaurant.  I might try to talk to him, but I'd never do what some of these people are doing.

Maybe we're going in this direction for a reason.  Not sure of the reason, but this strikes me as a new thing.  I don't remember hearing about this kind of stuff in the past.  Might behoove us to try reversing whatever trend has led us down this road.

By the way, I'm 100% against the examples you gave me, because I don't view cursing at or threatening anyone in public as useful.  Calling someone a cocksucker or whore at dinner is not how I'd define "holding your officials accountable."  If a group wants to chant "shame" at Cruz, or "abortion is immoral" at Pelosi in a restaurant, then that doesn't strike me as abusive or offensive.  It's annoying as fuck, especially if you're at the next table.  And my point in starting this thread is to explore where the fine line is between annoying as fuck and believing you are accomplishing some kind of civic duty.

Yes it is, and it is going to get worse and people are going to get hurt and die. Supposedly an explosive device was found by the mailbox of George Soros - nobody got hurt - this time. Maybe the left will act in this manner as well, but when the leader of a sect calls for animosity and hate toward over 50% of the population of the USA / women / and the press, and essentially condones the assault and murder of the press without apparent retribution, violence is just around the corner. Unfortunately, since I think the right has many more guns than the left, it will be a one sided blood bath. I suspect that if the Dems should win the House and/or Senate this fall, the current lame duck congress will furiously pass a bunch of legislation that will ruin this country more - cutting Medicare and Medicaid, probably trying to get rid of abortion rights, some sort of an alien and sedition act, and whatever else they can get away with. I also believe Trump will rally his troops to form a "home guard" to protect this country from the fucking liberals - his own brand of brownshirts or militia to 'keep the peace" and keep the country on the right track. If the GOP wins this fall, I am on record that there is no election in 2020. But, I overreact - certainly none of my fears have come true yet - trump has been the ideal middle of the road president.
BTW - just saw two commercials on tv for my representative - the GOP one warning me about the democrat candidate being a socialist and that the plans are for the democrats to turn the country socialists - open borders, government run healthcare, robbing from the rich.  I then saw the ad for the Dem candidate - who told his backers that he is "going to work with the gop and bridge the gap across the aisle".    Trump may be right - Red wave coming.

Aloha, this was true when guys like Truman would be pulled from a Haberdashery and run for office - and even he was backed by a machine - but now-a-days, you are selling out and taking money and bribes and selling your soul from day one - there is no altruism in running for office anymore

I hate to keep disagreeing with you, but the logical place this is heading is that McConnell's wife - who is the government btw - will not be yelled at, she will be assassinated. Same with Pelosi's husband, or child, or Hiliary or Chelsea Clinton - that is the logical, and at this point I would say, inevitable place we are heading.  And to be honest with you, Trump is PRAYING that someone takes a shot at him or kills someone in a restaurant or does some left wing violence, because Marshall law can be called.. what better way to gain control?

I don't care why they are doing it. They are doing it. They are doing more than people who sit behind a keyboard and complain all day. They do more than people who sit in front of a television camera and complain all day. They do it more than people who sit behind a radio mic and complain all day.

You can say the same for any profession. There are people who go into teaching for "summers off". There are people who go into police work to "break heads". There is no altruism anywhere.

Wow. Step away from the ledge. Do I think Trump would take advantage of a situation like you describe? Most likely. Do I think he is praying for someone to take a shot at him? That's a bit out there. It would take more than just someone taking a shot at him for martial law to be invoked.

It's all over the place, and it isn't just political. Look at social media shaming. People take things way to personally. You get bad service from a shop? Blast them on the Internet and encourage others to pile on. A friend of mine was a victim of that with her dog grooming service. She wasn't finished with grooming someone's dog at a promised time and this person decided to blast her business all over Facebook and encouraged others who never used her service to do the same. She had to close her business and open again under a new name.

Same thing with Yelp reviews. Someone gets bad service and by their review, you would think that the waitress murdered and ate their children. Places of business are suing now to get bad reviews removed from sites like Yelp because they are many times bullshit.

As someone who has had a completely inaccessible congressman, I understand the frustration.  Peter Roskam actually just spoke at an elementary school, and none of the parents were notified that he was coming because he tries to keep his whereabouts secret...because he doesn't want to speak to his constituents.

Well stated, and dead on.  It was reported one day this week that Trump is already gearing up lawsuits if the House and/or Senate is won by dems, so not even sure the issue of a lame duck congress comes up if he prevents the newly elected from taking office.

It was Carl Bernstein.  He said his White House inside sources say that if the Dems win the House by a small margin (1 to 8 seats) then Trump plans to throw everything into chaos by challenging any close race and claiming fraud and gumming up the works and trying to stop those folks from taking their positions in Congress.

Wow. Step away from the ledge. Do I think Trump would take advantage of a situation like you describe? Most likely. Do I think he is praying for someone to take a shot at him? That's a bit out there. It would take more than just someone taking a shot at him for martial law to be invoked.

Looking like "Lock her up" is now "Blow her up."  Bombs sent to Hillary and Obama today, intercepted by Secret Service, so the report goes thus far.  Hey, comparatively speaking, calling Pelosi a fucking bitch in a restaurant or screaming at McConnell in a bar sounds downright friendly.

Now a similar package was found sent to CNN.  Gee, I wonder why people think violence and bombs are a good way to handle things.

Well, you could go back and ask the Sons of Liberty why they thought it was a good idea to tar and feather tax collectors.

Add NY governor Cuomo to the list of bomb recipients.
