Saw the CNN anchor debating the offensive Dana Loesch about her comment, and Loesch didn't back down.  I was so hoping the anchor would have said "do you think it's as good for ratings as the attack of the U.S. embassy in Benghazi has been for the ratings of Fox and conservative media?  Do you love U.S. Embassy bombings?"

I wouldn't disagree with her point that it's ratings gold for MSNBC or CNN, but that doesn't mean they hope for a school shooting.  It's sales gold for the gun makers every time one of these shootings occurs, because there's a rush on purchases of AR-15's by people who think they'll be banned.  Whatever.  Unintended consequences are a fact of life.

I saw that one of the final speakers at CPAC (Mona Charon, a long time conservative author) had to be given security and an escort to leave the building in one piece after making some casual mention during her speech about how she dislikes the way the GOP is willing to accept disgraceful treatment of women (Trump and Roy Moore) and that it's unbecoming of the party to act in such a way.  It amazes me that this is what such a large segment of the party and the conservative movement has become.  There are always these far flung weirdos that hunker down in a tribal sense, but this shit is become nuts and widespread.  Not sure how this helps grow their overall movement.  You'll get buy-in from the nuts, but beyond that 30%, you're pretty fucked.  America's youth is nauseated by this shit, and they are going to grow up remembering this as representative of the GOP, rather than what the party was 15 yrs ago.

Rob many of your posts reflect amazement and wonderment at what's going on within today's Republican party and the direction they've gone along with how they conduct themselves. I don't quite get that my friend. This shit's been coming down the pike for years and really shouldn't come as any surprise at all. There are certainly good republicans and, in that same breath, there are god-awful progressives. That said, the GOP is currently being held hostage by a bunch of fucking alt-right knuckle-draggers and tea baggers. These people aren't really very bright and, worst of all, they seem to embrace their ignorance. They are of the ilk that represent a pack mentality and are a collection of followers and not leaders. Trump has become their God and here's a profoundly flawed and mentally unstable man who can do no wrong in their eyes. I'll come right out and say it....this is the same kind of shit that happened in Germany and gave birth to the Third Reich.

Sorry, but your buddy Kark is a poster boy for this kind of mindset and belief system . He's as much of a follower as any in that fucking CPAC crowd. Had he attended CPAC he would have been right there booing and jeering Charen. I could barely stand Hillary Clinton but for all the grief she caught for calling these clowns "deplorable" she was absolutely right. And the likes of Kark and "The Coach" are in the same basket as the rest of them. What's even worse is that these fools hide behind the Bible and think their outlook and posture on life gets the rubber stamp of approval by Jesus Christ himself. How do you combat that sort of idiocy?

Nothing today's GOP says or does surprises me anymore. And you know what? If they continue unchecked as they are the sky's the limit on what they are capable of. If that happens, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Maybe it's time to stop being amazed and, instead, it's time to start getting pissed. Works for me.

You make good points. What amazes me is the speed and breadth at which the whole GOP seems to joining in. I get that there are knuckledraggers, but it appears to be the majority characteristic. THAT surprises me.

One of my favorite quotes. Mahatma Ghandi at a conclave. Discussing religion-and asked about Christ.
Ghandi answered " Your Christ, I very much admire: your Christians- not so much!"

I have to find that video when I get a chance of Michael Steele calling out the nuts at CPAC.

Steele is a paid and regular contributor on MSNBC, so I see him on there constantly during Morning Joe or as a guest on Rachel's show.  He's been calling out those nuts all weekend on that channel and I heard him on Morning Joe today and he was extremely dismayed at the direction of the party he's been a part of for 40 yrs.

I believe that in his statement somewhere, he said that The Republican party is doing nothing to attract young African-American voters. Heck, they aren't doing anything to attract any new voters as long as this current leadership is concerned.

I like Michael Steele...don't always agree with him but I respect him and he seems a reasonable man. Conservatives like him are just fit to be tied at the direction the GOP has taken.

Because he has common sense. That's something the talking heads at Fox don't like. They want people to fall in line and march over the cliff as they watch.

He's your basic, old fashioned, reasonable conservative.  He's the kind of guy that 25 yrs ago would have gotten into a room with a Kennedy and hammered out a compromise bill that could get through the Congress.  I know we keep all wondering where these guys all went.  They didn't go anywhere.  Money took hold of them.  They are not allowed to be reasonable or compromise anymore.  If they do, the donor money will primary them and drum them out of the party.  They have to choose between remaining principled and probably losing, or being beholden to donors and retaining their power.  Hoping eventually the voters will stop standing for this.

Not just money, but the extreme wings of their respective parties. Old Lady Feistein didn't get the endorsement from the Democratic party in California because she was deemed "not liberal enough". Rauner is being blasted by the extremists in the Republican party because he isn't "conservative enough". I don't like Rauner, but Ives is Mussolini.

I can live with the extremists because simple math will usually do them in and doom them to being in their own little powerless world.  If California wants to deem Feinstein not liberal enough, I guess that's their prerogative, just like Alabama wanting Moore because he's less liberal than Luther Strange.  At least in my world, that's democracy in action.  This business of Congress not caring about the will of the people because of the will of the donors is what really irks me these days but, then again, we could vote them out and we fucking don't!

Saw the Feinstein article but didn't read it, but what I heard on the radio is more that the "Old Lady" part of your statement is the reason she didn't get the endorsement...because she would be 90 by the end of her term.  Maybe "not liberal enough" is code for "too old"...since there's some belief that you get more conservative the older you get.  Or maybe they realize that they need a Kamala Harris to rope in young people, and that for the dems to win elections, we need young people to vote.

Ives is a flat out loon...but she's got plenty of money for signs, that's for sure.  What astounds me is that both Rauner and Ives are promising to roll back the state income tax hike, which I do NOT understand.  I mean I "get" that some people hear that and they say "lower taxes for me...count me in!"  Hey, I'm all for lowering my tax burden, but not to the detriment of the state.  Am I missing something, or does this state have so much debt that there ain't no amount of cutting expenses that will right the ship? Maybe it's that I'm in the business of funding a very expensive condo building, but geez, who actually thinks we can get out of debt AND run the state by cutting taxes?  And while I'm at it (tying into the other thread)...when they abolish unions and everyone's wages take a nose dive, and we collect even less in income tax, won't we need MORE of these state services rather than less?  How are we going to fund that?  And pay our existing debt?  I liked Quinn.  He didn't bullshit anyone and he was an honest guy.
