The Indians pitcher was diagnosed with leukemia. He's hoping to pitch again this season.

Playing will be completely dependent on what type he has. Hopefully Jay will chime in (this isn't my area by a long shot) and discuss the possibility, but at his age, most ain't good.

He was diagnosed with CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, which is usually treated with pill form of chemotherapy.  His prognosis is likely very good as the treatment is highly likely to result in remission.  Kareem Abdul Jabbar was diagnosed with this same type of leukemia about 15 years ago.

How Carrasco does in baseball will be dependent upon his tolerance of treatment.  Some patients have minimal to no adverse effects but these are patients who have every day jobs or are retired.  Others have a rough time until the medication gets adjusted and then it's livable.

I've never had a patient with CML whose had the demands of professional sports at the highest level.  It will be interesting to see how he does.  As opposed to those players who came back from testicular or Hodgkin disease or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the treatment for CML is daily and forever.  He isn't given big whopping doses of chemo and then recovering for a few months, then back to as good as new.  If he has adverse effects, the goal is to minimize them because he has to put up with them from here on.

My old neighbor must have had that kind.  He had it for 7 years when we moved in.  It seemingly didn't impact his life at all.  He and his wife were just about to move into an assisted living community, and on Memorial Day weekend, his wife was taken to the ER, and she was immediately admitted.  Ironically, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and it was the very aggressive kind.  She passed away around labor day.

Was very touching the tributes to Carrasco during All Star game.

Wrestler Roman Reigns has leukemia. He was first diagnosed in 2007 when he played football for the Vikings. It went into remission two years later. In October of 2018 he announced he was leaving the ring because it was back. He came back in May when it went back into remission.
