Pierre Pilote, who captained the Hawks in the early 60s and who was the first player I recall being a "captain", died at 85. Played 13/14 years with the Hawks and is in the HOF. Wore number 3, and as I recall, was a finesse guy.

Re: First captain
Was a finesse guy while in possession of puck, but also was one of the most penalized players. He was my favorite player back then. Norris trophy 3 times, runner up 3 times.sharpy wrote:Pierre Pilote, who captained the Hawks in the early 60s and who was the first player I recall being a "captain", died at 85. Just read that he never played organized hockey until he was 17. Said that he figured if he had puck, other team didn't. Also said figured he would get paid more if he was offensive and defensive.
Recall that apparently Hawks bought the St. Catherines minor league team so they would be sure to get Pilote.
My favorite memory--the one year we sat on mezzanine, player coming down ice-Pilotte gets in front to check, puts his forearms on guy's chest and his knee in his groin.

Didn't realize (Wikipedia) that at time he retired, was 2nd leading scorer for D-behind Doug Harvey.
Do recall a hockey magazine that had an article on who NHL players would least like to get angry with you -and it was Pilote. (he had a way to get back at someone)
