Real Deal

Post by SoxIlliniRob on Sun Sep 03, 2017 11:24 pm

Giolito is for real.  The guy throws nothing straight.  Everything is ducking and darting.  Changing speeds like crazy.  One of the things on which I base my judgment of the qualify of a guy's stuff is how many pitches out of the strike zone get swung at.  I saw guys swinging at, or almost swinging at, pitches anywhere from 6 to 18 inches outside of the strike zone.  With regularity.  He's good.  Reminds me a bit of the Cubs' Hendricks, but has better velocity.

Steve Ochoa and I were talking about this last week. His son works for MLB and has seen the 3D K-Zone thing (which we can't see on television) and said that Giolito's pitches move enough to make them difficult to hit. On the other hand, Lopez throws the ball straight as a string and will likely get clobbered.

You can pretty easily see the movement just watching it on live TV.  Watching him reminds me of some epic whiffle ball games I've had in my life.  His pitches are just fluttering all over the place.
