    Awful.  Tragic.  Sad.

Yea its sad he died so young, but ya know, I could never understand these "amateur" pilots. I'm sorry, but flying a plane, where one little mistake is the end of you, seems to me not to be a "hobby'.  That's like saying that someone died b/c they were operating on themselves b/c they were an  "amateur surgeon".  Something you shouldn't be "amateur' at and expect a good outcome - and piloting a plane is number 1.

Thought something similar when I heard.  I was telling my daughter about JFK Jr.'s plane going down, and it's not even the amateur thing that I find problematic...it's the plane itself.  I'm sorry, but those small planes just seem terribly unsafe.  Yeah, I know...if it's going down, a bigger plane probably isn't going to protect you, but it seems like those tin cans are more likely to go down.  If I have money to burn, I own my own plane and have a pilot to fly my ass around.

His was kind of an "experimental" plane. I heard someone describe it as a surfboard with wings.
