Playoffs Thus Far Empty Playoffs Thus Far

    Post by blondy28 Fri Oct 06, 2017 12:39 pm

Honestly, missed the Yankees/Twins game because my daughter and I were watching Shameless, but got the recap...the early scoring...starting pitchers on short leashes.

Arizona/Colorado also good.  Felt bad for the youngster pitching for the Rockies who got lit up...but still, that turned into a game, and starters didn't go far.  Thought maybe Arizona pulled Greinke too early, but worked out.  In essence, the play-in games are game 7, so you do see a lot of those kinds of moves.

Yesterday....sorry Sale fans...but I knew he was going to get rocked.  Seems he's either really good or average to bad, and in the last month of the season, he's been average to bad.  I told my son he would have his ass handed to him, and he did.  Verlander looked better than I expected.  Altuve is a BEAST.  Too bad for Nunez.

Cleveland is a Juggernaut.   Sabathia is pitching today.  Had no earthly clue that he was even still playing.

    Four games today.  That's living.

Cleveland/Yankees.  Wow.  Kluber chased after 2.2.  The only pitcher thus far that's pitched up to the hype (taking into account they've only played one inning in LA as I'm posting, so Kershaw still has a shot) has been Bauer.  Hendricks pitched an awesome game, but can't really say he "lived up to the hype" because he got no hype...that rightfully went to Strasburg, with every "expert" in the pregame show predicting a Washington win because of him.

Yankees...that's gotta hurt.  You chase Kluber after 2.2, with a huge lead, and you can't hold onto the lead.  I'm not sure that series goes more than 4, and wouldn't be surprised if Cleveland wraps it up in 3.

Boston can't compete with Houston.  Would be surprised if that series went more than 4 as well.

It's weird how just about anything can happen in the postseason.  it's why I don't dismiss the chances of any team that makes it.  Pitchers get hot, bullpens get hot, aces go cold and hitters heat up or slump.  Wouldn't surprise me any more if the Cubs went 11-0 in the postseason than if they lost the next 3 games and were done.  I know the smart money is on the Indians, but shit can go wrong.

Well, it appears that the former White Sox pitcher that's hot garbage is Sale.  That's some big time sucking...losing twice in four games.  I would say Quintana was "lights out", but you can't even say that when you're pitching against Scherzer, who was flat out nasty lights out.  Makes the choke job on Saturday even harder to swallow, but we've still got a shot at wrapping things up in Chicago.  I certainly don't want to face Strasburg again.  Our victories against Strasburg and Scherzer were flat out luck...a timely hit here and there.  Not sure we can expect that a second time with Strasburg.

Each Cubs' starter has let up 2 hits.  Pretty darned good.

Aloha, I don't feel like doing the research, but aren't Kershaw's October issues due to short rest?  I remember distinctly in game 6 last year that A-Rod said that when Kershaw pitches on short rest and his pitches are up there on the gun, then he's going to have a bad game, but if he's coming in around 90 to 92, he can dominate.  Sure enough that's exactly what happened.  From the get go they were announcing the reading on the gun and saying that was a bad sign, and he flat out imploded.  Plus, Hendricks was dominating, so Kershaw had no room for error.

Have no idea what Jake's got.  If his nagging hammy is anything like Scherzer's nagging hammy, I'll take it.

And p.s., NOBODY is hitting, so put our best defensive team on the field.  We were lucky to get outta there with a win with those errors and base running snafus.

Rob, you said if the Cubs were going to go anywhere this post season, it wouldn't be with starting pitching, and all our starters have done is let up 2 hits each.

Unless Yankees implode again, looks like that series is going 5.

    Playoffs are crazy....

I wouldn't say getting out of a 5 game series is going somewhere in the playoffs.  They are pitching well, and not at a level that I find entirely unexpected, except for Lester, who did better than I expected.  Hendricks and Q were what I thought they might be.  I can't say I believed they couldn't win because of their pitching, but it's not how I'd have envisioned it all working out.  They have proven starters on the Cubs who just didn't all have outstanding seasons.

Aw geez...Kark isn't here, so you have to pick apart every little sentence of mine.  Did I SAY the Cubs are going somewhere?  Did I say winning two games constitutes "going somewhere"?  Big picture, Rob...the supposed best pitchers in baseball have been shellacked in the playoffs.  All the supposed "pitcher's duels" have been anything but.  The Cubs/Washington series has been the only series that has featured dominant pitching (or anemic hitting....take your pick).  The point here, Rob, is that the playoff script, as always, isn't playing out.

I'm not trying to pick you apart at all.  You were making points about the Cubs going somewhere and starting pitching, and I only noted that even if they win this series, that's not what I'd call "going somewhere."  That said, if they make it to the World Series and lose, that's still worthy of being called "having gone somewhere", whether it's their pitching or hitting that gets them there.

Don't even get me started.  I was yelling screaming about the line-up before the game even started.  The ONLY reason (ironically) that we were even in that game is because of the defense of Jay and Heyward.  Zobrist made an error earlier in the game that ended up not being costly, but we were lucky that it wasn't.  And yes, I realize that Zobrist ended up driving in the tying run, but Baez needed to be in that line-up.

No YOU were making points about the Cubs going somewhere and starting pitching.  "Rob, you said if the Cubs were going to go anywhere this post season, it wouldn't be with starting pitching, and all our starters have done is let up 2 hits each. "  I was quoting you and your analysis prior to the playoffs starting.

They should have tried to trade that galumph after last season while the iron was hot. Now people are seeing his offensive and defensive holes.

Kevin, I can't begin to tell you how many Cub fans I told the same thing.  Trade him after the 2015 playoffs when he was a hot commodity.  Send him to the AL, where he belongs, and I got almost universal push-back from Cub fans.

Yep, agree.  Once he was no longer able to be a catcher, he needed to go.

What's the deal with Strasburg?  Still thinking this might be a ploy and that this may be their Willis Reed moment.  Or perhaps, Jordan flu moment?

Not to mention the foul names. How dare a White Sox fan suggest that the Cubs do something!

    Now saying Strasburg will start.
Methinks he's been reading/hearing all the shit about his routine and lack of heart-or some lower portion of his anatomy and changed his mind. Imagine his teammates weren't happy. In a more "normal" response to a playoff game Scherzer said he's available to work today.

Someone in Times today mentioned that Strasburg once declined invite to All-Star game where he would have been starter in San Diego-his hometown. But, then again, he already has his $175 million contract.

PS- think Dusty was taking one for the player (as he always does-why players like laying for him) and he had to really stretch to come up with something 1/2 way reasonable.
